Dissociative symptoms and disorders, psychotic symptoms and disorders, and borderline personality symptoms and disorder, are distinct diagnostic entities in international classification systems, like the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Yet, clinically they often present as anything but clear cut and often overlap such that a person may present a mixed collection of symptoms that reflect dissociative, psychotic and borderline personality pathologies. This raises challenges for assessment, requires careful case formulation and can make treatment confusing, protracted, and arduous.

The interface between dissociative, psychotic and borderline symptoms by its nature is difficult to conceptualise and needs to start with an understanding of how traumatic stress may give rise to the discrete presentations, as well as their overlap. This training will examine these complexities, offer guidance in assessment and considerations for treatment.

Learning Objectives

Discerning the overlap and differences in dissociative, psychotic and borderline symptoms and presentations.

Understand the role of trauma on the impacts on these symptoms and presentations, and how they may intersect.

Assessment to assist clarity between dissociative, psychotic and borderline symptoms.

Formulating treatment plans to respond to the interface of diverse symptoms and presentations.
